When selecting the perfect door for your home, most homeowners prioritize aesthetics, durability, and cost. After all, the door you choose sets the tone for your space, reflects your style, and needs to be built to last. At Treely™ Doors, we understand these priorities and are committed to offering high-quality, beautiful doors that suit your needs. One of the factors that contribute to long-lasting durability is wood stability
While wood stability may not be the deciding factor in choosing your door, it plays a significant role in ensuring that your door maintains its beauty and functionality for years to come. At Treely™ Doors, we’ve developed a unique Star Stability Ranking System to help you make informed decisions when selecting wood species for your interior doors.
Each wood type we offer has been assigned a star ranking system.
Why Wood Stability Matters
Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC)
Dimensional Change Coefficient
Wood, being a natural material, responds to changes in its environment. Humidity and temperature fluctuations will cause wood to expand or contract. There is a tool called an Equilibrium Moisture Table that calculates the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of the wood based on the relative humidity and ambient air temperature.

Different wood types will react differently to the conditions they are exposed to. When we refer to wood stability, this is how much a particular species of wood will move (expand or contract) in response to changes in its environment. This movement is measured by a property called the dimensional change coefficient, which can be significantly different between each species. The higher the value, the more the wood will change with environmental conditions. Wood that reacts less to these changes (lower value) is considered more stable.
The Star Stability Ranking System found on the Treely™ website is based off of each species dimensional change coefficient data.
Treely™ Star Stability Ranking System
To make selecting the right wood species easier, we’ve created a Star Stability Ranking System. This system ranks popular wood species on a 1-4 star scale based on their dimensional change coefficient, helping you choose a door that best suits your environment.
You can find this star stability ranking on each door style page of the Treely™ website, displayed in the lower right corner of the wood type image
Customizable Options with Stability in Mind
This information is not intended to scare anyone away from using one wood type or the other, at Treely™, we take this as simply an additional layer of information to consider when customizing your doors.
Panel Doors
For panel doors these options are in our sticking and panel material options. You can adjust the wood skin (veneer) thickness to offer greater stability. Opting for a thinner veneer, will help reduce the dimensional change, especially in extreme environments.
STICKING OPTIONS

Wood 1/4″ Thickness
Wood 1/8″ Thickness
MDF
You can also select different panel materials.
Solid Wood

MDF
Solid wood panels tend to move more than wood veneer panels with an MDF core. If you’re opting for a paint-grade door, an MDF panel would be the most stable and cost-effective choice.

Flush Doors
For flush doors, veneer thickness can be adjusted for enhanced stability.
Solid Wood
A wood skin approximately 3/32” thick.

MDF
For paint-grade applications, a MDF surface remains the most stable and budget-friendly choice
